In september 2008, I left France for Australia, where my partner is from. We engaged in a long overland journey, crossing thirteen countries over three months. Each of them was a new Doorway to the East, taking us further and further away from the familiar. I kept a journal of this experience in thirteen passport-sized notebooks. They were filled in parallel, and therefore provide a linear narrative, but could also be read country by country, presenting thirteen visions of the same journey.

Germany - january 10th 2008
When I was young, Germany wasn’t a country. On the map, there were two Germanys – FRG, GDR; West, East; Federal Republic and Democratic Republic. The words didn’t mean much, but the colours were different.
